Which Multi-Vitamin Should I Buy?

This is a question I get almost daily. The answer isn’t quite as simple as you may think as there are many variables to consider including price, ingredients and dietary needs.

A once daily multi-vitamin is the most important nutritional product that one can use and I can not stress that enough. Everyone, regardless of age, should be taking a vitamin supplement daily. The average person does not get the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals in their diet. Most people have diets consisting of overly processed foods and/or “fast foods” that have very minimal nutritional value. The body is being robbed of essential vitamins necessary to function properly. Even if you do have a proper diet, you may still not be getting everything you need through food and a multi-vitamin is a simple way to supplement.

There are a wide variety of multi-vitamins available in the marketplace and it can be confusing. Most important is that the supplement is a “once daily” muti-vitamin. That means the product has everything necessary included in one dose. Some brand names (Centrum) will add other herbs, vitamins, etc. and market the vitamin as a “specialty’ vitamin, ex. Centrum Silver, Centrum Performance, Centrum Men, Centrum Women, etc. These additional vitamins, herbs, etc. are usually un-necessary for the average person and serve no real purpose. No need to spend the extra money. I also highly recommend vitamins for children as, again, their diets may not be sufficient for proper health. However, parents need to be aware that vitamins are not candy and that children are especially susceptible to vitamin overdose. Many children’s vitamins come as gummies or chewables and kids may want more than the recommended dose. Keep them away from the kids and dose them as detailed on the label.

Another issue to consider is quality and price. Many people are not aware that there are grades of vitamins that vary in quality. The FDA does not regulate “nutritional supplements” i.e, vitamins, herbs, etc. and these products can vary greatly in the amount of active ingredients and the quality of the ingredients. “Pharmaceutical grade” (A grade) vitamins will be the most expensive but the most beneficial and are usually not available in the general marketplace. They will be manufactured under strict guidelines and use higher quality ingredients. Other vitamins (B, C, D, F grade) will decrease in price and quality accordingly, however, the majority of what you will find on the shelves of your local pharmacy are safe and effective. Liquid vitamins are widely considered to be “better” because of quicker and more complete absorption but there is limited research to actually prove this to be true 100% of the time. Furthermore, adult liquid vitamins (Geritol, Centrum, etc.) can be extremely unpleasant to the taste buds. Capsules incorporate the best of both worlds as they are easy to swallow and may have better and quicker absorption than hard-pressed tablets.

Still another consideration is one’s dietary and health needs. Some people may find themselves lacking in certain vitamins and/or minerals because of a poor diet or medical condition. Iron is frequently added to vitamins for those who may be lacking as well as folic acid which is important for pregnant woman. Fluoride is a common additive, along with iron, to children’s vitamins to promote healthy tooth enamel. One must be aware that you can overdose on vitamins although it is extremely rare and improbable. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat soluble vitamins meaning that your body holds them in fat cells where they can build up to toxic levels over time, while the other common vitamins, (the multiple B vits., C, etc.) and trace minerals are water soluble and excreted through urine, sweat, and feces. One cannot overdose on water soluble vitamins. Therefor, you must be aware of any medical issues that may limit the body’s need for certain vitamins as well as being aware of the amount of individual vitamins (vit. D is a good example as many people take high, once weekly doses) that you may be using.

A multi-vitamin is of the utmost importance for a healthy lifestyle. Choose a quality product at a comfortable price point while taking into account your nutritional needs.

Yeast Infection During Pregnancy and How to Treat It Naturally

Yeast naturally exists in the vagina and our intestinal tract and occurs when you have an overgrowth and ultimately the yeast takes over causing an imbalance which then results in yeast infection. Pregnant women are even more prone to this because their bodies are producing extra estrogen and other hormonal changes are taking place. If you have diabetes or high blood sugar or if you have taken antibiotics, then that exasperates the situation even more.

Please do not take any oral anti fungal medications over the counter or prescribed. They are generally not safe for pregnant women. Consult your doctor on what is safe and use some tips below to help treat it naturally.

Ways you can treat yeast infections during pregnancy naturally.

1. Wear only cotton underwear, avoid taking baths, only use natural unscented personal care products, and avoid sugars and refined foods.

2. Eat foods rich in Lactobacillus acidophilus, a friendly bacteria that exists naturally in our body and helps fight excess yeast among other benefits. L. Acidophillus boosts the immune system, provides the correct balance in your gastrointestinal tract, helps with urinary tract infections, reduces chances of ulcers, and helps balance cholesterol. It is a great supplement to take even if you are not pregnant. Foods rich in this friendly bacteria are yogurt, fermented pickles like sauerkraut and kimchi, miso soup, tempeh, kefir, and fermented cheese. Kefir, traditionally popular in certain regions of Europe is quickly gaining popularity in the US. It is basically fermented milk and has stronger beneficial bacteria then yogurt. You can also make or buy kefir made from coconut water or juice.

3. In addition to eating foods rich in L. Acidophillus, taking a probiotic supplement is very beneficial especially if you have been on antibiotics. You can also use a liquid form of a probiotic and use it as a suppository to naturally help treat vaginal yeast. Saturate a light tampon with the liquid probiotic, insert and leave it in for 2-3 hours. This is completely safe for pregnant women as a means to treat vaginal yeast during pregnancy. I do not recommend douching with commercial products but you can do a douche with dissolving powder form of probiotic in water.

4. Using anti-fungal extracts and oils to use as natural suppositories can also be very helpful. Tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract are powerful and effective. Make sure you do dilute it in water. You can add about 10-20 drops of oil/extract to 2 cups of water.

5. One midwife has treated many of her pregnant patients with hydrogen peroxide. It safely kills the pathogenic organisms that exists in the vagina. You can buy 3% hydrogen peroxide at any drug store, it comes in a dark brown bottle. Place small quantity in a small cup and fill a syringe with it. You can dilute the hydrogen peroxide with 1 or 2 parts water if you are experiencing extreme irritation, otherwise no need to dilute. In a shower or over the toilet, take your time slowly and gently to insert the hydrogen peroxide into the vagina. You can do this safely once a day for a week.

If some of the natural therapies are not working for you (some women have deep rooted issues like diabetes and other health problems where recurrence continues despite many natural effective therapies), then i highly recommend working with a naturopathic doctor to come up with a natural solution.

How To Lighten Your Skin Fast

Many people now want to covet a fair and rosy skin. Unfortunately, the sun can make our skin dark, dry and ugly. Prolonged sun exposure can significantly darken our skin and can also make us more susceptible to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The good news is, there are a lot of treatments that can quickly lighten your skin and give you the fair skin that you have always wanted. Let me tell you some of the best ones:

1. Mix alum powder and honey. Use this as a mask. Apply it on your skin liberally and let it sit there for an hour before washing it off. Alum crystals can be bought from the drug store or from a health and wellness store. Pound the crystals until they turn into powder. Mix it up with honey.

Alum can help lighten the skin. Honey also has bleaching properties so it can improve the color of your dermis. Use this treatment every night until you achieve the results you want.

2. Papaya and lemon juice both have whitening properties. Try getting the extract of ripe papaya. You can also mash it and mix it with a cup of lemon juice. Massage the mixture all over your skin. Make sure you apply the mixture religiously so your skin can absorb the whitening agents in the ingredients. Let it sit there for an hour before washing it off.

3. It is also important to drink Vitamin C supplements. This can help inhibit the excessive production of melanin in your body. This vitamin can also make you less susceptible to sun damages.

Vitamin C can also be found in fruits and vegetables. Try drinking freshly-squeezed fruit juices to supply Vitamin C into your body.

4. Look for a whitening moisturizer that contains Extrapone Nutgrass, Phytessence Wakame and Manuka Honey.

Extrapone Nutgrass is a type of plant with root extracts that can inhibit melanin production. Studies have found out that this plant can actually make your skin whiter by up to 45% during the first two weeks of use. This is an ideal ingredient for people who are looking for fast and easy solutions.

Phytessence Wakame is not really a bleaching agent but it can make your skin less susceptible to skin damage and less susceptible to skin darkening. This sea kelp can help preserve healthy levels of hyaluronic acid. This is the acid needed to lubricate collagen fibers.

Manuka honey can even out your skin tone and reduce the appearance of spots. It also works well in locking moisture in your skin cells and tissues.

The Negative Effect Poor Personal Hygiene Has On A Person’s General Sense Of Well-Being

For several days I have tried to settle on a topic to write and have had absolutely no luck coming up with one with which I felt comfortable. While this was laying heavily on my thought I got up one morning and, as is my custom, entered the shower and began washing and soaking. The hot water was grand and I basked in complete contentment as it gently cascaded down and pummeled my body. As I applied my favorite body wash for men, using it according to direction, my thought focused on how wonderful it was that I could shower and keep clean but wondered what the negative impact would be of not being able to stay clean and practice good personal hygiene. So there you have it. I decided on using that epiphany moment of insight as my point of departure for this article. I am glad I did. It is a worthwhile topic on which to write. What then is the negative impact of a general lack of personal hygiene and an habitually dirty body, on such person’s general sense of well-being?

Where do we look for answers to this perplexing question? I decided to focus on the plight of street people as the most transparent and meaningful examples of the point I wanted to make. I want it perfectly clear that I do not see any causal relationship suggesting an inability to practice good personal hygiene as the cause of anyone having to live on the streets. But I do suggest it is axiomatic that there is a nexus establishing the need to live on the street, as a primary cause of a person’s inability to practice the requirements of good personal hygiene..

  • Problems Encountered From A Lack Of Personal Hygiene: The Effect of A Dirty Body on General Well-Being

Forced to live on the streets or some other place where a person is unable to do what is necessary for good personal hygiene has devastating effects. Here are some of them.

Employment

If such a person had employment when this problem arose, it is unlikely that he will be able to stay employed much more than a week or so following his move into the streets. For who among us will look with charity and patience on someone in the work force, perhaps in the cubicle next to us, filling the available air with body odor?

What are the employment prospects if he did not already have a job? After a week or so living on the street his chances of gaining suitable employment are next to nothing and becoming less and less with each passing day.

Social Considerations

It would be an exceptional host or hostess sponsoring a dinner party that would invite our street person to attend. Even if a close friend, I suggest that no invitation would be issued and the most that would happen is that food might be inconspicuously offered him as a way of extending charity. In the name of brotherly love, he might even be allowed to take a shower. But how many times would he be able to count on that? He would have exhausted his welcome by the end of the first week, if not before. Again, his lack of cleanliness, dirty clothes, the body odor and bad breath that exist under such circumstances are all road blocks that prevent his inclusion in the social network, if any, that he had before this disaster.

Then, too, there are people who for whatever reason are just plain careless and even unwilling to spend the time needed to be clean. This type of person almost by definition becomes a social misfit and loner. Shy and introverted he would typically spend his time alone shutting out the world and others who might normally be actively engaged in his life in some meaningful way.

Medical and Health Concerns

Finally there are any number of medical and general health conditions contracted when living on the street. Lice in the head and pubic areas acquired from the need to use poorly maintained public restrooms and having to sleep almost literally on the ground every night. Colds and the flu become common place as do a number of other medical conditions requiring treatment.

What Can Be Done To Help?

What are some of the things we must do to remedy or mitigate the effects of these life circumstances that are impairing the general sense of well-being of those encountering this problem?

    • Updated vaccinations are needed to protect the public health and wherever possible prevent the outbreak of disease.

    • Proper sanitation is a must.

    • The construction of low cost public housing to put a roof over the heads of homeless people and get them off the streets.

    • Those who have the means to look after themselves but don’t should be required to attend a seminar on how to keep themselves clean and healthy.

    • For a person that just won’t maintain personal cleanliness there is very little that we can do for him except to make every attempt to instill in him the need, if necessary by engaging the service of professionals in social work, psychology and other disciplines.

  • Those with other disabilities have their local public health Department and a number of social and religious entities on which to draw. The Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels and similar programs are widely available to homeless, elderly and disabled people. Depending upon one’s circumstances, education and counselling on how to properly care for one’s self might be available. The Internet, a good telephone directory and the Public Health Department are good resources for identifying locally available agencies capable of providing help to a person wanting to overcome this problem.

Conclusion

The failure to follow good personal hygiene practices will lead to a variety of personal, social and medical conditions that greatly impact upon a person’s sense of general well-being. They also have the potential to cause problems for the general population if allowed to get out hand. A wise person once wrote the aphorism “cleanliness is next to godliness.” By remembering this it serves as a reminder of our need to practice good personal hygiene.

Different Health Benefits of Purple Tea

Introduction

There is a rare form of tea imported from the African continent to our country. Cultivated in Kenya, it has sweet notes that present a pleasant lingering aroma. People of the country refer it as purple tea. They claim that it has similar health benefits as those given by the green tea that we have heard of. Many health experts and scientists have worked on green tea and have found many health benefits associated with it. After this new development, the focus of scholarly research looks to have shifted to a new variety of tea with loads of antioxidants. It is none other than purple tea.

Purple Tea

This rare form of tea has been found to have many medicinal properties. The people from one generation to the other have passed the information about the therapeutic effects of this tea variety. Some research has already been done on this new tea variety to bring about its other aspects. The research has found that this tea is rich in anthocyanins. This tea variety also has some measure of catechins. It has low caffeine content and since it does not have the toxicating property. It also has a high dose of antioxidants. A class of antioxidants called anthocyanins offer the color purple color to this tea variety. As a result, this beverage has more earthly, brisk and rustic flavor when compared to that of the regular black tea. It also has the ability to quench the feeling of thirst. It is known to cleanse the vascular system in the human body. This in turn reduces the risk of developing hypertension and cardiac arrests. The purple tea fetches a price that is three to four times that of black tea in the international market.

India to Grow Purple Tea

Soon this tea variety would be grown in India as well. Assam is most likely to emerge as the center for purple tea cultivation in India. A senior scientist associated with <I> Tocklai </ I> Tea Research Institute has said about this development. Currently, Kenya is producing this variety of tea in the world. According to this research institute, the clone <I> TRFK 306/1 </ i> for purple tea was originally fetched from north-eastern Indian state of Assam. The research team from this organization has also identified the wild bushes of this variety of tea in hilly forest areas of <I> Karbi Anglong </ I> and <I> Cachar </ I> districts in Assam. Here, this variant of tea can easily be grown commercially in the north-eastern state of Assam.

What to Do About Medications and Sauna Use

Saunas and medications are things that do not necessarily go well together. It will be best for one’s sauna safety to watch for one’s medications before using a sauna.

In some cases saunas and medications can cause a person to be unable to lose heat with ease. This means that the heat that a person can retain when in a sauna may not easily escape the body. Beta-blockers and diuretics are among the most common medications that can cause this to happen.

The body will end up overheating with ease if a person uses a sauna and one of these medications. This can cause a person to feel a substantial fever and to experience a rapid heart rate at a consistent level. These effects can be very dangerous to the body.

Another thing to see about some medications is that they may cause a person to become drowsy. Falling asleep in a sauna is a very dangerous and sometimes deadly thing to do. It will help for one’s sauna safety to avoid a sauna when using medications that can cause drowsiness.

Antihistamines are some of the most harmful things to see when looking into saunas and medications. Antihistamines can cause a person to be more susceptible to heat stroke. This can cause a person to easily suffer heat stroke when in a sauna.

The best thing that a person can do here is to consult one’s doctor with regards to saunas and medications. It will help to talk with a doctor about one’s medications to see if a person can use a sauna while using them. A simple talk with one’s doctor can make all the difference when it comes to sauna safety. It can be a person to see if a sauna is right for one’s needs or not.

The Use of Herbal Remedies and Garlic For Rosacea

Antibiotics

People suffering from rosacea and who are treated with antibiotics over a prolonged period are more prone to yeast infections. The use of antibiotics over a long period can decrease normal bacteria populations and increase the number of yeast.

Most treatments have side effects, these vary from person to person and depend on a number of factors including diet. A treatment that works for one person with minimal or no side effects will not work for another person. Dosages also vary from person to person and are also affected by a number of factors.

Diet:

Typically one person may enjoy or eat a type of yogurt, which helps maintain the bacteria balance in their diet and so may help the decrease in bacterial population of the gut. Another person may be able to eat small quantities of herbs and spices which are known to have anti bacterial properties. Garlic is well known as a natural antibiotic and antibacterial with reports going back through history. It has been suggested that it might help fight acne, and a report on its use for rosacea also suggests that this may be the case.

Herbal remedies work for some people: It is suggested that a significant problem with herbal remedies for rosacea sufferers may be the variable ‘natural dose’ if the herb or spice is not made into a tablet with a known dosage.

Garlic

A person with severe rosacea for about 5 years had pulsed light treatment, antibiotic treatment and eliminated gluten from their diet. The elimination of gluten got rid of most but not all the rosacea. The person then had a nasty infection and started taking nine garlic tablets a day for about a week and then cut back to 6 per day. They say “The rosacea is pretty much gone and they even went on a gluten binge at thanksgiving – and drank red wine without having a flare up”

Analysing why this worked for this person: The Gluten free diet: Various articles on the internet suggest that a gluten free diet helps where the digestive system has been affected by antibiotics. Therefore this may have helped because the person was on antibiotics. It is suggested a gluten free diet helps return the gut to normal after antibiotic treatment.

Garlic Tablets.

Exercise caution if trying garlic, it is reported as a trigger for around 10% of sufferers.

It is suggested that the garlic tablets worked for a number of reasons:-

1) The use of garlic tablets following the antibiotic treatment and gluten free diet may be significant. Perhaps after the other treatments had made an impact but not cured the rosacea. They use of antibiotics would not have been a long term solution.

Perhaps the garlic tablets were then the equivalent of the ‘straw that broke the camels back’. On their own before the other treatments, they may not have cured the rosacea. This is speculative, they could have been effective. Clinical trials are needed to answer this question and also identify if the garlic produced a long lasting cure, which is expected to have been the case.

Garlic like many natural herbs and spices that are antibacterial, do not affect ‘good bacteria’, which is why most people can eat and enjoy herbs and spices. Therefore the person who was now going to take the garlic tablet long term should have been able to do so.

2) The garlic dose was controlled by use of tablets. Consider eating slices of garlic pizza; having 2 slices instead of 1 will double the dose. This would be the equivalent of the person taking 18 tablets instead of 9.

One chef may add three times the amount of garlic than another. This combined with the above would be the equivalent of a person taking 54 tablets instead of 9

One chef may use concentrated garlic out of a tube, another may use pressed garlic cloves. Again the quantity of garlic in a slice will vary significantly.

The active ingredient of garlic cloves will also vary depending on when and where it was grown and the ‘variety’. All plants and fruits have different varieties, for example consider the different varieties of apple.

The use of garlic tablet enabled to the dose to be accurately maintained over the first week and then accurately reduced by 1/3rd

Garlic seemed to help rosacea that affected the eyes: The person had really bad rosacea and had horribly bumpy cheeks at the worst point, it also affected their eyes and they were using moisture eye drops for five or more times a day. Since the garlic tablets, they have hardly needed to use the moisture eye drops. There may be a reason for this related to the way onions and garlic smells can make the eyes water.

If a person eats a lot of garlic, the smell can actually ‘come out of the skin’ and that person can have a ‘garlic’ smell.

Therefore it is likely the garlic in the body will manage to find its way into the skin of the eyelids and perhaps into tears or the tear ducts, in which case the sensitive nerve ending on the surface of the eye (which react when your peel onions and this smell touches them) send a message to the brain which ‘makes the eyes moist’.

Addendum: Another rosacea sufferer who was warned that garlic might be a trigger says “I feel that garlic doesn’t really bother my skin. It may be that I eat it mostly as part of an olive oil salad dressing. At any rate, I’ve been wondering whether the garlic might in fact be helping since it’s known to have some antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.”

The Many Benefits of a Sauna Bath on All Organs of Your Body

We all have heard of sauna as a great way to relax giving the body a chance to detoxify itself. Sauna is included in various routines of health clubs, gymnasiums, etc. The effects of sauna are not only skin deep but also deep reaching as it affects all the organs of our bodies.

The sweat bath of sauna sets up a series of reactions that has a positive effect on the entire body as well as all the inner organs. It starts with the dosage of the capillaries, which leads to increased supply of blood to the skin in order to draw heat and disperse it deep inside the body. Due to this action, the heart rate increases to meet the demand of additional flow of blood and the various organs like stomach, liver, kidneys, muscles, brain, etc tend to flush out the impurities. As the pores of the skin open up by sauna, toxins get flushed out along with the sweat.

A Perfect Exercise For Your Heart

Due to this rapid flow of blood in the entire body during sauna, the heart is forced to pump blood at a higher rate causing a strain that is good for the heart. Many researchers claim that the increased volume of flow of blood during sauna keeps the blood pressure within normal limits while the others opine that the effect is purely transient in nature. There may be different views on the lasting effect of sauna on blood pressure and heartbeat, but no one can deny that the overall effect of sauna is good.

Effect of Temperature Rise

During a sauna session of 15 to 20 minutes, the temperature on the surface of skin rises up to 10 ° C, and the rise in the inner temperature is generally up to 3 ° C. This acts as a catalyst starting a chain reaction, which Leads to detoxify the body. The action is somewhat akin to “fever” in which most bacteria and virus can not survive. This helps to not only rid the body of harmful bacteria but also give a chance to the cells to repair them.

The raised temperature during sauna also affects pituitary gland, among others, which leads to a better control of metabolic rate that has a direct effect on the various glands of the body like adrenal, thyroid, ovaries, and testes. All this leads to better health and a sense of well-being.

A rise in the inner temperature also leads to stimulating the functions of various glands that secret hormones. It is also noted that due to improved functioning of ovaries and testes there is a marked increase in sex drive after the sauna bath!

Effect On The Lungs

Because of the effect of sauna on various organs, the demand for oxygen in the body increases by as much as 20%, putting additional pressure on the lungs, which in turn meet it by quickening their pace. Due to higher temperature, the clogged respiratory passages are opened, giving relief from various minor respiratory problems like colds. However, sauna is not recommended for anyone suffering from pneumonia or any other acute respiratory disease.

Important Advice
Sauna should be taken under expert guidance only, and should be discontinued the moment there is any feeling of discomfort. This is not intended as medical advice and you should consult your physician if you have any questions.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a natural healing science, art and philosophy primarily concerned with detecting and then eliminating interference to your nervous system. Since your nervous system controls every aspect of your body, chiropractic can have a major impact on multiple areas of your health. Founded in 1895, it is the world’s largest drug-free healthcare system and the 3rd largest primary healthcare system in the USA behind medicine and dentistry. Over 25 million Americans will see their chiropractor this year.

Does it really work and how?

Yes Virginia, chiropractic is the real deal! Chiropractic is firmly grounded in science and has an ever-growing body of research showing it to be safe, effective, comfortable and affordable. The latest estimates show that over 85% of Olympic athletes utilize chiropractic care to enhance performance and stay healthy as do most professional athletes. No question that it works!

Chiropractic is based on the fact that every structure and function of your body is controlled by the nervous system. If there is interference to the nervous system, then whatever body part or function that nerve was controlling will stop working at 100%.

For example, if a person suffers a pinched (irritated) bundle of nerves in their lower back they frequently experience back pain and muscle spasms. What most people do not realize is that the nerves in the low back not only control the muscles but other organs as well including the colon, bladder and reproductive organs. Irritation to the same nerve bundle can, in addition to muscle spasms, cause symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, bladder control issues and menstrual cycle problems. What surprises many is that a person with a pinched nerve bundle in their low back may have the other symptoms but no pain and no muscle spasms! Only about 10% of your nervous system tells you about pain so you can have a problem in 90% of your nervous system and NO PAIN.

Chiropractors focus on the spine because this is where the delicate nerves are most likely to be compressed or irritated as they pass through on their way to control all parts of your body.

The majority of spinal problems arise from physical, mechanical stress to your body such as accidents, injuries, prolonged sitting etc.. These stresses and injuries result in stiff immovable joints which in turn cause surrounding joints to become overworked, loose and eventually damaged. The treatment to correct these problems also has to be physical and mechanical in nature.

It is crazy to think that taking a drug is going to loosen up a stiff, damaged spinal joint. The drug may cover up the pain and symptoms but will do nothing to correct the physical cause of the pain. In fact taking drugs over time will allow the joint to become more and more permanently damaged.

Chiropractors employ many gently methods of physically restoring the normal motion and function to your spine which reduces nerve interference and allows your body to heal itself. These treatments are called spinal adjustments and are typically, not only pain-fee, but an enjoyable experience.

Is Chiropractic Safe?

Yes, chiropractic care is exceptionally safe! The minuscule risks of chiropractic care have been greatly exaggerated by our competition in order to scare you away from the safest form of healthcare and back to medicine, the most dangerous form. Chiropractic has a better safety record than any drug, even baby aspirin and Tylenol! Medical treatment has become the 3rd leading cause of death in the USA, right behind heart disease and cancer, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans every year.

An interesting statistic is that you are more likely to be killed by being struck by lightning than killed by a vending machine and you are more likely to be killed a vending machine than by a shark and more likely to be killed by a shark than by a chiropractor!

Now knowing how safe, conservative and effective chiropractic care is, doesn’t it make sense to you to start with chiropractic first and then if you don’t get well go on to more radical and dangerous forms of care like drugs and surgery? We are a backward society that often starts with the most invasive dangerous treatments first and then sees the chiropractor afterward as a last resort. Insanity.

Please help us permanently dispel this myth about chiropractic care being risky. Educate your friends and family. Spread the word and save a life!

At what age should a person have a chiropractic check-up?

Chiropractic care has fantastic benefits for all ages and ideally a person should have their first check-up shortly after birth.

I know what you may be thinking, “Infant check-up!!?” Why would a brand new baby need chiropractic care? Stop for a minute and just think about what a baby goes though coming into this world. Even during a normal natural delivery there are tremendous pressures on the baby’s neck, back and pelvis of up to 90 pounds per square inch.

With modern medicine turning childbirth into a medical procedure instead of a natural process, infant trauma and injuries are sky rocketing. You see when you drug the mother, her ability to feel and push the baby out is impaired which forces the doctor to have to pull and twist the baby out from the birth canal. Babies are not designed to be pulled and stretched during delivery which is unnatural and causes injury, they are designed to be compressed and pushed out of the birth canal which is natural and much safer. This is the same reason c-section deliveries have a much higher rate of spinal injury compared to natural childbirth.

It takes just a split second for a spinal injury to occur during birth. An unexpected push from the mother, a pull at the wrong angle from the doctor, too much force from the doctor, the use of forceps or vacuum and you have a sprain or even worse injury to the baby’s spine. This injury, called a vertebral subluxation, if undetected and left untreated can plague the baby for the rest of their life, limiting them from reaching their full potential. “As the twig is bent so grows the tree!”

OK, chiropractic is safe and good for babies but what about senior citizens? I have heard the most ignorant statement repeatedly from seniors: “I know, at my age, I have arthritis so there is no point in trying to fix my spine” WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

ALL ages can benefit from chiropractic care. Even a single chiropractic adjustment in the right circumstances has resulted in unbelievable improvement in the quality-of-life of many patients. Until you are dead, your body has an incredible ability to heal and improve. Never give up on improving your health! If your doctor ever tells you “You’ll just have to learn to live with it” he/she is actually telling you it is time to find a new doctor, one that will help keep you improving and maintaining your health and well-being for life.

Does treatment hurt?

For most people the chiropractic treatments, called spinal adjustments, are not only comfortable but are actually an enjoyable experience. All treatment is geared to each individual’s comfort level and the old “No Pain No Gain” approach is never used. It is heartwarming to see children who are so small they can’t even get up on the adjusting table by themselves, fighting with their siblings to be the FIRST one adjusted. Pediatricians would be green with envy to see how even the smallest kids are happy to be in the chiropractic office and how they love to get adjusted.

Does my insurance cover Chiropractic?

Although most insurance policies have some coverage, the reality is that in most cases it is very limited and so highly managed that, like most other health services, it pays for only a portion of needed care.

There is currently a prevalent form of craziness that I call “Insurance Insanity”. It has 2 main parts: Firstly many people have this notion that if they can just somehow obtain really great health insurance (which by the way no longer exists) that this in some way protects them and makes them healthy. Secondly, they think that if a service is not covered by their insurance that they really don’t need it. CRAZY! A prime example is a patient who needed about $1,200 worth of chiropractic care, who had the money but refused the necessary treatment because he felt it was too expensive. When asked if it was more cost-effective to let his spine continue degenerate to the point where he will need a $200,000 surgery which would leave him disabled for life? His straight-faced answer was “Well, my insurance will cover the cost of the surgery.” Now that my friend is just plain crazy.

When it comes to care, if you need it, you need it! Regardless of if it is covered, regardless of if you can “afford” it and regardless of if you want it! If you need it, you need it.

A much better question to ask is “What is the best value for my healthcare dollar?”. Investing your money is all about value not amount. For example, I believe that a dollar wasted is too much but spending a half of a million dollars to buy a one million dollar house is an extraordinary deal.

The truth that any patient with a severely degenerated spine would gladly sign over the deed to their million dollar house, to the doctor, if he could restore their health. The sad fact is that once damaged, there is no cure. There are no spine and nervous system replacements and it is very unlikely there ever will be. What is absolutely tragic is that this type of degeneration is almost 100% preventable with regular check-ups and proper chiropractic maintenance.

Chiropractic is an exceptional value for your healthcare dollar. If you need it, the benefits you receive from chiropractic are incalculable compared to the amount of money spent! In fact they are priceless.

How much time does a chiropractic visit take?

For your first visit, allow 45 minutes to 1 hour. On this visit you will need to complete some obligatory health forms, you will have a chance to sit down and consult with the doctor to review your symptoms, history, lifestyle and your health goals.

The next step is a chiropractic physical examination, some very high-tech nervous system scans, possibly an x-ray study and finally, if you are in pain, some first aid care and home instructions.

Typically on the second visit allow 30 to 45 minutes. On this visit you will receive your doctor’s report of findings where he will let you know if he can help you, he will show you what is wrong and why, how long care will take, how much care will cost and finally he will let you know of your options for care. You will then receive your first full chiropractic adjustment (treatment).

On subsequent visits allow 10 to 20 minutes door to door. The actual treatments may only take a few minutes once your work-up is complete and you have set up your treatment plan and goals.

Once I start care do I have to go forever?

In a great practice the doctor should support all clients at the level and frequency that they choose. There should never be any pressure to do anything you are not 100% behind. You may take advantage of all the phenomenal health and wellness benefits for as long and as often as you choose. Great doctors should always respect and support the wishes of their clients.

Does my body become dependent on chiropractic care?

This question always make me smile. There is absolutely nothing about chiropractic care that makes you dependent on care. There is however something that is highly addicting about feeling really good. It is funny but once people start feeling great they tend to want to stay feeling great. Chiropractic care helps your body to function at a much higher level which feels fantastic. Chiropractic care is similar to exercise but without all the sweating. If you consistently work out, the benefit is you become physically fit which feels much better that being unfit and out of shape. Most people who are in great shape continue to work out because they like the feeling of being in shape. What happens if they stop exercising? They continue to feel good for a time but all too quickly lose their conditioning and lose the benefits of feeling great. Now I ask you is exercise addicting? Does your body become dependent on exercise? Of course not and there is also nothing about chiropractic care that makes you dependent either.

Conclusion: Safe conservative chiropractic care is an essential part of a natural wellness lifestyle. Not only will you enjoy less pain and an enhanced quality of life but you will avoid permanent damage and degeneration to your body.

Why Is Reflexology Controversial Anyway?

Reflexology is based on the principle that there are different areas situated on the feet, hands, and ears, which correspond to different areas in the body. According to reflexologists there are different reflex areas on the feet and hands which form a body map; an image of the body. Reflexologists manipulate these zones through pressure on the premise and believe this pressure will physically affect different areas of the body. While there is no concrete medical evidence which supports this theory, practitioners are adamant that they can improve health and wellness through pressure points on these areas, and despite the lack of support from the medical community many people have found comfort and recovery through this alternative practice.

Reflexologists claim that they are able to influence “life energy” (known as Qi), open energy pathways and restore energy balance through this treatment. While facing a fair amount of criticism from the scientific community, reflexology still holds some standing, especially in the circles of alternative medicine practitioners. So, we know that reflexology has come under fire in recent years, but where did this treatment originate and can that possibly aid in substantiating reflexologist’s claims, debunking whether this alternative treatment has historical substance or if it was just formulated by a guy who was looking to make a quick buck and, instead, made a fortune.

Interestingly enough the practices and principles of reflexology can be traced back to ancient Chinese and Egyptian civilizations. A practice started in the United States in 1913 when a doctor by the name of William H. Fitzgerald claimed that by applying pressure in specific areas he could anesthetise other areas of the body. This idea was developed in the 1930’s by Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist stated that the hands and feet mapped the body through various reflexes. It was then that what was known as “zone therapy” was renamed reflexology. Ingham’s findings were then later developed by a woman by then name of Laura Norman who shaped and formed the practice of reflexology into the practice that it is today.

Now that we know the history of this alternative treatment, how does it work? We know that reflexologists claim that different areas on the feet and hands affect different areas of the body, but let’s delve a little deeper. For example, according to reflexologists the balls of the feet affect the heart and chest area, the tips of the toes affect the head; the arch triggers the pancreas and liver, and the heel; the lower back and intestines. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, but through applying pressure to these areas reflexologists believe that they can promote health in organs in the corresponding areas. An explanation of the treatment is that these pressure points send impulses to the brain, releasing chemicals and producing endorphins which combat pain and de-stress the body.

While reflexology does provide stress and pain relief it is also an extremely relaxing treatment. Indeed, reflexologists do apply firm pressure during the treatment, but this being said a reflexology session should never be painful. If you do experience pain during the treatment ensure that you let your reflexologists know. Your therapist may continue to apply pressure to these tender areas and the discomfort should decrease.

So, although there is limited evidence to substantiate this alternative treatment and a possibility of pain during the treatment, so why would anyone try reflexology? Because of the results! Despite the substantial opposition from the scientific community reflexology has helped many people with headaches, arthritis, hormonal imbalances, insomnia, stress, digestive disorders, and other conditions. The fact of the matter is; if you are finding no respite from any one of these conditions then why wouldn’t you try it? Each and every person is different, and while reflexology might not work for your neighbour it may work wonders for you!

This treatment is for anyone and everyone. You cannot say that a treatment is ineffective until you have tried it, and while there is much division around the subject, it could be your save and grace. Try a session of reflexology and at the very worst, you’ll simply relax and feel great afterwards. And if you are ticklish, don’t worry. Reflexologists apply a fair amount of pressure, so even if you giggle when someone touches your feet you will soon get over it and relax.

Colon and Gastrointestinal Health

Cleansing in itself has many benefits to the body. People can get as much toxic substances as the nutrients they get from the variety of food they eat. This is especially true if the person does not observe healthy diet where majority of the food source he gets come from fast food and junk foods. Also, when people eat too much, the digestive system will also have much to handle and stress follows. In the normal process of digestion, food will be broken down into pieces and the nutrients they contain will be absorbed by the body. The waste products will then be removed by the body.

There are times when the intestines cannot excrete all the waste products, and some of them will be retained inside the colon. This is what causes the toxin build-up in the body leading a person to feel a myriad of uncomfortable symptoms including migraine, headache, dizziness, sleepiness, decreased mental awareness etc. This can also lead to constipation. To prevent this and also to get rid of this build-up of waste products, cleansing is done.

Cleansing is not performed in a regular basis. After colon cleansing is done, the colon is expected to be restored and somehow refreshed therefore making it more ready in the normal process of digestion and absorption of food. Another colon cleansing in the same week shouldn’t be necessary. But this only applies in certain colon cleansing products such as enemas, or formulated beverages or other colon cleansing pills. Aloe Vera Colon Cleanse Tablets are safe to use on a daily basis because it does not cause any disruption in the normal digestive process.
