  • exercise
  • maintaining a healthy body weight
  • herbal remedies

Cholesterol is made primarily by the liver from the cholesterol and saturated fats in food. It is a fatty substance (lipid) that circulates in the blood after production by the liver. It’s important to remember that cholesterol is produced by the body for a purpose. Cholesterol is not harmful as long as it’s within certain balanced limits, and in fact, performs a variety of vital functions such as, hormone synthesis, building and maintaining cell membranes, aiding in fat digestion, and producing Vitamin D, among many other things. There are two types of cholesterol – LDL (the so-called ‘bad’ form of cholesterol) and HDL (the ‘good’ form of cholesterol). The body has a natural mechanism to regulate these types of cholesterol, keeping the system in balance and harmony.

Popular pharmaceutical statin drugs for lowering cholesterol work by suppressing the symptoms, which can cause other problems as well as unpleasant side effects because the drugs are not designed to work with the body. Natural herbal medicine works to create balance in the body to support the health of the whole body system, as well as relieve ailments, and help prevent future disease.

Top Three Herbs Used for Lowering Cholesterol

Rooibos contains a high level of minerals and nutrients which have been shown to benefit the maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels and keeping blood pressure within the normal range.

Research and experience has shown that a combination of herbal remedies, regular exercise and dietary changes can make a significant difference to LDL cholesterol levels and reduce or even eliminate the need for prescription statin drugs.

Herbs like Rooibos, Gugulipid and Red Yeast Rice are well-known herbal remedies for high cholesterol and are renowned for their beneficial effects of reducing levels of LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol and triglycerides, while increasing the levels of protective HDL cholesterol. Herbal Remedies For Hemorrhoids

Herbal remedies for ailments are being celebrated these days because of their potency and also because they hardly have side effects. They are not a replacement for modern medicine; rather, they are there to compliment modern medicine. There are times modern medicine may not have a cure for an ailment and there would be natural remedies such as is found in hemorrhoids. There are natural remedies for hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoid is taken care of medically by cutting it off. There is really no cure provided that could make the hemorrhoid shrink. Therefore, if you visit your doctor that you have hemorrhoid, chances are that you will be going through surgery so that the hemorrhoid can be cut off. This can be done using a range of procedures. One of them is strangulation which involves the severing of the affected part by putting a rubber band around it. This stops the flow of blood to the area which eventually dies and drops off leaving a scar behind which may be permanent. It is not as if surgery is a bad idea but some people just hate to hear anything like it and so would prefer herbal remedies for hemorrhoids.

However, on the other hand, a natural remedy for hemorrhoids using herbs is more efficient and requires that nothing be cut off. It only involves taking some herbs, diets and a couple of exercises. The herbs are all targeted at reconditioning the body so that it can take care of itself. Somehow, with the consumption of the herbs and application where necessary, the hemorrhoid will start shrinking and it will go back to its initial position. There are no side effects and there are no scars left behind. The sufferer can resume his or her normal lifestyle in full after a couple of days into the treatment with the herbs.

Herbal remedies for hemorrhoids are therefore more embraced by people suffering from this ailment because it costs much less than surgery and the procedures is not an “impossible” one. If you have been eating vegetables, you will not have problems with using these herbs. It is however advised that you do not wait till your hemorrhoid reaches advanced stages before seeking a cure or remedy. The truth is, hemorrhoid can be taken care of at home in the initial stages without having to buy any drug at all. It is essential that you therefore educate yourself where necessary to prevent further occurrence of this ailment.

Natural Herbal Remedies for an Upper Respiratory Infection

The upper respiratory system includes the lungs, windpipe, ears and sinuses. Infections in these areas can be from bacteria or a virus, resulting in a common cold, flu, sinusitis, otitis (ear infection), croup and bronchitis. Upper respiratory infections caused by viruses are nonresponsive to antibiotics but some natural remedies can help prevent a worsening condition and alleviate bothersome symptoms.

Aromatherapy is the inhalation of essential oils through steam. This type of natural herbal remedy can help clear a tight, congested chest. Boil 2 quarts of water and pour into a bowl. To the water, add a few drops of eucalyptus and sweet thyme essential oils. Put a towel over your head and the bowl and inhale the steam as deeply as possible. Do not use this natural herbal remedy if you have asthma.

A little known herbal remedy for upper respiratory infection is an elecampne infusion that you can make at home. Pour 1 cup of cold water onto 1 tsp. of shredded elecampane root and let it stand for 10 hours. Heat and sip one cup full 3 times a day.

If you have an irritating cough, a wild cherry bark infusion may just be your cup of tea. Pour 1 cup of boiling water onto 1 tsp. of dried cherry bark and steep for 15 minutes. Remove the bark and drink this concoction 3 times a day.

If you have access to homeopathy medications, which many health food stores carry, aconite 6c can help with fever, tight chest and a tickling cough. You should take aconite 6c 3 times a day for up to 4 days. Kali bichromicum 6c is beneficial for a loose, rattling cough. Voice loss along with a burning throat and cough is often treated, homeopathically, with Kali Phosphorus 6c.

Traditional Chinese treatments for upper respiratory infections focus on preventing an attack of sudden symptoms, such as an uncontrolled cough. Make a therapeutic tea with some or all of these herbs: plantain seeds, balloon flower root, honeysuckle flowers, skullcap root, or gardenia fruit.

An upper respiratory infection in the middle or inner ear can result in extreme itching, throbbing and a feeling of water in the ear. Refrain from eating or drinking dairy products while treating an ear infection as it can worsen the symptoms. Sipping St. John’s wort tea along with holding a warm hot-water bottle to your ear can quickly ease ear pain. Homeopathic remedies for ear infections include Aconite 6c, Belladonna 6c and Chamomilla 6c.

China is well known for growing vast fields of herbs for the herbal medicine cabinet. Astragalus root is one of the best natural herbal remedies for treating an upper respiratory infection. As a preventative, astragalus root helps fend off viruses and bacteria for people who are prone to upper respiratory infections. Typically, as with traditional Chinese medicine, this dried root is combined with several other herbs, such as chamomile, for use in teas, capsules or tinctures.

Make Astragalus tea by steeping 3 to 6 tablespoons of the dried, chopped root in 2 to 4 cups of water for about 10 to 15 minutes. Drink this tea several times a day as a preventative measure against colds, flu, bacterial and viral infections. If you are already sick, you can double the amount of root used in the tea as well as doubling the amount of tea you drink each day during your illness. It is common to use even higher doses of Astragalus root as it is a safe herb and very well tolerated by most people. If you have never tried this root before, start with the lower dose to see if it has any adverse effects for you.

Your local health food store may carry Astragalus root in capsule and tincture forms or you can make your own if you prefer. A typical dose in capsule form is 1 to 3 grams of the root per day. For a tincture, the recommended dose is 2 to 4 ml, taken 3 times per day. Adding pieces of dried Astragalus root to soups provides you with a daily tonic, providing you eat the soup daily.

Astragalus roots contain several compounds that provide medicinal effects. These compounds include Flavonoids, saponins, and polysaccharides. Flavonoids have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Polysaccharides boost the immune system, while saponins provide protection for the liver, inhibit virus growth and help metabolize insulin and glucose. Due to the big boost this herb gives your immune system, consult your health care provider if you have an autoimmune disease or if you are taking any other medications.

The benefits of this herb are many and some believe the immune-boosting effects can also help cancer patients after receiving chemotherapy by increasing the level of white blood cells. The increase in white blood cells results in a quicker recovery time. Some tests, conducted in China, show an increase of white blood cells in only eight weeks.

The Pros And Cons Of Herbal Remedies

Herbal remedies are getting a lot of attention, especially nowadays that our prescribed pharmaceutical medicines carry along with them potential side effects and problems. A lot of “herbal” and “natural” health supplements and medicines are becoming more and more popular because of their known effects and advantages.

One of the advantage of using herbal remedies as supposed to your prescribed medicines is that they cost a whole less than pharmaceutical remedies. Since the herbs do not need to be manufactured or developed, they cost a lot cheaper, and are more convenient as well. You no longer need to get prescriptions from doctors in order to be able to use a particular drug or remedy, unlike the different herbal remedies which you can just purchase without any needed consultation from your doctors.

Another advantage of using herbal remedies is that the herbal medicines may sometimes prove to be more effective as compared to our traditional prescribed medicines. Our dissatisfaction for our current healthcare may be the reason as to why we seek some other alternative. One possible cause for the effectiveness of herbal remedies is its potency. Some herbal remedies may prove to be more potent than others, depending on a few varying factors that may affect the herbal remedy’s effectiveness, such as the growing conditions of the herbs like exposure to air, light and moisture, or even the way that it was harvested. The manner of preservation can also play a factor on the herbs’ potency.

Although using “natural” and “herbal” remedies may sound appealing to a lot of people, it is important to remember that not all “natural” and “herbal” remedies are safe. A lot of these “natural” herbal medicines are composed of elements that can cause potentially harmful side effects to people, especially those that suffer from very serious conditions.

Herbal remedies may have been used for centuries already, but it does not mean that they are safe, especially not if you just take them without consulting with your doctors or herbalists about it.

One disadvantage for using herbal remedies over prescription medicines are the side effects that they may cause on your body when you take them, especially if you use them for a long period of time. Some herbal remedies are known to cause high blood pressure in the vessels of the lungs, while others may even cause your immune system to weaken, making you more prone to sickness and diseases.

Another disadvantage for taking herbal remedies is that you are not entirely sure if you are only getting the ingredients that you want in every pack of herbal medicine that you buy. Although you get the ingredient that you need, there will be some other such as twigs, bark, and other plant materials that may find their way in there along with your herbal medicine. Sometimes, you don’t get the ingredients that you really need since the amount of the ingredient can influence its effectiveness on a person. Add the fact that sometimes your herbal medicine may contain some other ingredient at one point, and contain another ingredient at another.

Whatever your stand on herbal medicine may be, it is always important to consult with your doctor or herbalist before you decide to take anything. Also, make sure that the herbal remedy that you chose to use will not interact with your current prescribed pharmaceutical medicines that you are taking in order to avoid any complications.

5 Natural Remedies For Arthritis

Arthritis, the inflammation and swelling that occurs in the joints, is an extremely painful condition that worsens with age. While little can be done to prevent or correct this disorder, there are a few natural remedies that sufferers can use to get relief.

Relieving Arthritis Naturally

Victims of chronic arthritis may feel at a loss to combat severe symptoms. While many OTC and prescription medications can take the edge off, they often do very little to truly dull the pain. It is for this very reason that most folks have turned to home remedies to reduce their agonizing inflammation.

Below are five primary ways to relieve arthritis naturally. You can try them all or find one that works well for you and stick with it. Either way, you will have the ability to stave off the distressing aches that accompany arthritis in a pure and natural way.

1. Oil Massages – A great oil massage can be an extremely efficient tool when it comes to mitigating the discomfort of arthritis. As a home remedy, it is also cost effective and requires very little set up. To indulge, find all natural, organic ingredients that have been proven to be effective and mix with a pure oil base. Grape seed oil would do just fine. Some excellent anti-inflammatory and muscle soothing ingredients to look for are garlic, castor seeds, pepper, and menthol, which blend well together and have helped many arthritis sufferers. Once you finish your mixture, apply liberally to infected areas and rub thoroughly. If you know someone who is great at giving massages, you can ask them to give you a hand as well.

2. Alfalfa Supplements – For centuries, people have sought a natural remedy that could sooth the pain and stiffness that comes with arthritis. Some swear by alfalfa and either eat the grain or ingest it in a capsule form.  Most contemporary arthritis patients prefer to take a pill as opposed to incorporating alfalfa into a daily food routine. Why does it work?  Alfalfa is full of minerals that help in the formation and strengthening of bones.

3. Raw Ginger – Many herbal remedies involve methodical preparation but with ginger, all you need to do is cut off a sliver and apply it to the area. You can also ingest it in a tea. If you decide to place it on the skin, you can wrap the area in a flannel cloth, which also has anti-inflammatory properties.

4. Black Strap Molasses and Cranberry Juice – Another superior home remedy that dates back to the pioneer days is a mixture that consists of four teaspoons of blackstrap molasses in one quart of cranberry juice. A glass a day can supposedly keep the inflammation at bay and may be well worth the effort. One may also combine this with any of the above remedies to maximize effectiveness.

5. Apple Cider and Honey – This herbal remedy calls for a mixture of apple cider vinegar and two teaspoons of honey.  The ingredients are both dissolved in a small glass of warm water and should be taken once or twice a day.  Most find this to be a pleasant tasting remedy, and it doesn’t take a lot of time to prepare.

What to Stay Away From

Arthritic people should steer clear of extremely cool temperatures. In the winter months, avoid going outside whenever possible. When you must go out, bundle up and try to keep problem areas insulated.

When it comes to arthritis prevention is worth a pound of cure, but flare ups are inevitable no matter how careful you are. With that in mind, it helps to know that there are cost effective, common sense home remedies that can help you mitigate the severe pain associated with arthritis so you can get on with the business of living.

Why Are Herbal Remedies Not FDA Approved?

The different herbal remedies that we can all find on the shelves of different drug stores and pharmaceutical companies are not considered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as drugs, but rather treats it as dietary supplements. This means that the different herbal remedies that we buy in order to stay healthy or treat illnesses are not regulated by the FDA as it would with prescription medications, which means that the quality and effectiveness of these herbal remedies can vary from one brand to the next.

The FDA claims that they can only regulate things which fall under the two categories, namely foods and drugs. According to the Food and Drug Act passed in 1906 and 1938, all food additives and drugs should be approved by the FDA before they can be sold in the market. They all need to submit evidences about their health claims or how they can cure an ailment or condition, before they can be legally sold to the public.

Herbal remedies, which are classified under dietary supplements, are composed of processed or unprocessed elements such as plant barks, extracts and essential oils. Since they are considered as dietary supplements, they are not regulated by the FDA like drugs or prescription medications.

They are more likely classified and regulated as food, which helps make it easier for herbal remedies to be sold in the market since there are fewer restrictions in terms of their approval. Unfortunately, since these herbal remedies make health and disease claims, there have been discrepancies as to where they are going to be classified, and how they are going to be regulated.

According to recent debates, FDA do not approve herbal remedies due to the fact that it cannot clearly define the line that separates structure and function claims over disease and health claims. If the line was clearly defined, then herbal remedies would have been easier to regulate. Herbal remedies, which fall under dietary supplements, are not clearly defined and separated from foods. This makes it difficult for the FDA to implement its regulations since it cannot clearly categorize the herbal remedies as to whether it falls under foods or drugs.

One incident that further helped blur the lines in categorizing herbal remedies as foods is when different food companies started making health claims themselves. If this was the case, then these foods should be regulated as drugs. Due to this turn of events, the FDA is now finding it very difficult to further scrutinize the difference on how foods and the dietary supplements should be categorized and regulated.

Ultimately, being able to create a standard for both food and drugs regarding disease and health claims is a step forward, but it is also important to remember that the way consumers think about the different claims that are presented by certain food and drug products, such as dietary supplements, should also be considered. Since dietary supplements are still considered to be in a class of its own, it will continue to be sold legally without restrictions not until it has been categorized by the FDA properly, whereby it can be regulated appropriately.

Natural Medicine – Is There A Difference Between Herbal, Homeopathic, and Holistic?

There is no shortage of terms when describing natural or alternative medicine. Of course you have natural and alternative but then there are herbal, homeopathic, and holistic. The confusion is sometimes so great it just might make a normally conservative natural health advocate scramble to catch that pesky beetle and send it down the hatch; all in the name of natural.

If this has happened to you the good news is that unless your pest control man just sprayed insecticide chances are you will be none the worse for wear and might even get a little extra protein out of your insect snack.

But while our somewhat off the wall example is a little farfetched it does prove a point and that is just because it is natural doesn’t necessarily mean it will be helpful, and in fact sometimes natural things can be downright dangerous (azaleas, certain mushrooms, mistletoe, etc..).

As we move past the these types of generalizations our focus start to turn more to specific terms such as herbal, homeopathic, and holistic. Defining them becomes much easier and the separation becomes much greater.

What in a term? Herbal, Homeopathic, and Holistic

Herbal remedies are those which, you guess it, are made from herbs. For example many of the herbal remedies for depression and anxiety contain St. John’s wort whereas, many of those fatigue contain ginseng. Most contain 5 or less ingredients and have multiple advantages depending on what herbs are included, the preparation method, and the form of delivery.

The term homeopathy is often confused with herbal, and oftentimes you will see an alternative remedy described as herbal and homeopathic. That said, these two forms of natural medicine couldn’t be more different.

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that uses many different types of ingredients found in nature in diluted form. The three principles that govern homeopathic medicine are the law of similars, the single medicine, and the minimum dose. According to the law of similars, “like cures like” which means that an illness can be treated by administering small doses of substances that produce effects similar to the disease or condition itself.

Homeopathic remedies can contain just a few ingredients or in some cases 20 or more. Oddly enough homeopathic remedies are considered to be safer than most herbal remedies and have been shown to be very effective in treating certain mental health disorders such as ADHD.

And finally that leaves us only with holistic medicine. Holistic medicine could be accurately described as a form of therapy whose goal is to treat the whole person, not just the part, or parts, in which the symptoms, or symptoms, occur. This type of medicine is the preferred choice for most naturopathic doctors and often includes a combination of diet, exercise, relaxation techniques, as well as other forms of complementary medicine, combined with herbal and/or homeopathic remedies.
