3. Raw Ginger – Many herbal remedies involve methodical preparation but with ginger, all you need to do is cut off a sliver and apply it to the area. You can also ingest it in a tea. If you decide to place it on the skin, you can wrap the area in a flannel cloth, which also has anti-inflammatory properties.

4. Black Strap Molasses and Cranberry Juice – Another superior home remedy that dates back to the pioneer days is a mixture that consists of four teaspoons of blackstrap molasses in one quart of cranberry juice. A glass a day can supposedly keep the inflammation at bay and may be well worth the effort. One may also combine this with any of the above remedies to maximize effectiveness.

5. Apple Cider and Honey – This herbal remedy calls for a mixture of apple cider vinegar and two teaspoons of honey.  The ingredients are both dissolved in a small glass of warm water and should be taken once or twice a day.  Most find this to be a pleasant tasting remedy, and it doesn’t take a lot of time to prepare.

Why Are Herbal Remedies Not FDA Approved?

The different herbal remedies that we can all find on the shelves of different drug stores and pharmaceutical companies are not considered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as drugs, but rather treats it as dietary supplements. This means that the different herbal remedies that we buy in order to stay healthy or treat illnesses are not regulated by the FDA as it would with prescription medications, which means that the quality and effectiveness of these herbal remedies can vary from one brand to the next.

The FDA claims that they can only regulate things which fall under the two categories, namely foods and drugs. According to the Food and Drug Act passed in 1906 and 1938, all food additives and drugs should be approved by the FDA before they can be sold in the market. They all need to submit evidences about their health claims or how they can cure an ailment or condition, before they can be legally sold to the public.

Herbal remedies, which are classified under dietary supplements, are composed of processed or unprocessed elements such as plant barks, extracts and essential oils. Since they are considered as dietary supplements, they are not regulated by the FDA like drugs or prescription medications.

They are more likely classified and regulated as food, which helps make it easier for herbal remedies to be sold in the market since there are fewer restrictions in terms of their approval. Unfortunately, since these herbal remedies make health and disease claims, there have been discrepancies as to where they are going to be classified, and how they are going to be regulated.

According to recent debates, FDA do not approve herbal remedies due to the fact that it cannot clearly define the line that separates structure and function claims over disease and health claims. If the line was clearly defined, then herbal remedies would have been easier to regulate. Herbal remedies, which fall under dietary supplements, are not clearly defined and separated from foods. This makes it difficult for the FDA to implement its regulations since it cannot clearly categorize the herbal remedies as to whether it falls under foods or drugs.

One incident that further helped blur the lines in categorizing herbal remedies as foods is when different food companies started making health claims themselves. If this was the case, then these foods should be regulated as drugs. Due to this turn of events, the FDA is now finding it very difficult to further scrutinize the difference on how foods and the dietary supplements should be categorized and regulated.

Ultimately, being able to create a standard for both food and drugs regarding disease and health claims is a step forward, but it is also important to remember that the way consumers think about the different claims that are presented by certain food and drug products, such as dietary supplements, should also be considered. Since dietary supplements are still considered to be in a class of its own, it will continue to be sold legally without restrictions not until it has been categorized by the FDA properly, whereby it can be regulated appropriately.

Natural Medicine – Is There A Difference Between Herbal, Homeopathic, and Holistic?

There is no shortage of terms when describing natural or alternative medicine. Of course you have natural and alternative but then there are herbal, homeopathic, and holistic. The confusion is sometimes so great it just might make a normally conservative natural health advocate scramble to catch that pesky beetle and send it down the hatch; all in the name of natural.

If this has happened to you the good news is that unless your pest control man just sprayed insecticide chances are you will be none the worse for wear and might even get a little extra protein out of your insect snack.

But while our somewhat off the wall example is a little farfetched it does prove a point and that is just because it is natural doesn’t necessarily mean it will be helpful, and in fact sometimes natural things can be downright dangerous (azaleas, certain mushrooms, mistletoe, etc..).

As we move past the these types of generalizations our focus start to turn more to specific terms such as herbal, homeopathic, and holistic. Defining them becomes much easier and the separation becomes much greater.

What in a term? Herbal, Homeopathic, and Holistic

Herbal remedies are those which, you guess it, are made from herbs. For example many of the herbal remedies for depression and anxiety contain St. John’s wort whereas, many of those fatigue contain ginseng. Most contain 5 or less ingredients and have multiple advantages depending on what herbs are included, the preparation method, and the form of delivery.

The term homeopathy is often confused with herbal, and oftentimes you will see an alternative remedy described as herbal and homeopathic. That said, these two forms of natural medicine couldn’t be more different.

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that uses many different types of ingredients found in nature in diluted form. The three principles that govern homeopathic medicine are the law of similars, the single medicine, and the minimum dose. According to the law of similars, “like cures like” which means that an illness can be treated by administering small doses of substances that produce effects similar to the disease or condition itself.

Homeopathic remedies can contain just a few ingredients or in some cases 20 or more. Oddly enough homeopathic remedies are considered to be safer than most herbal remedies and have been shown to be very effective in treating certain mental health disorders such as ADHD.

And finally that leaves us only with holistic medicine. Holistic medicine could be accurately described as a form of therapy whose goal is to treat the whole person, not just the part, or parts, in which the symptoms, or symptoms, occur. This type of medicine is the preferred choice for most naturopathic doctors and often includes a combination of diet, exercise, relaxation techniques, as well as other forms of complementary medicine, combined with herbal and/or homeopathic remedies.
